Saffron Cultivation

Agriculture :

The bulb is considered a fragile organ that is damaged by suffocation in the clay soil, so the soil in which we want to plant saffron is better to be well drained and not overwhelmed by clay soil, with an acidity ranging between PH = 7 to 7.5, and it generally does not need mineral fertilizer if the land Fertile and comfortable, but it is enough to add decomposing and fermented organic fertilizer to work on dismantling the soil.

The right time to plant saffron:

Late summer is considered the most appropriate time for planting saffron, specifically in September, when it is possible to start planting bulbs from mid-September to early October. It is worth noting that it is better to avoid late planting to ensure good growth with sufficient density to produce large quantities of saffron hairs.
Choosing the land: Choosing a place to grow saffron is one of the very important things for the success and high production. Saffron is one of the plants that love medium heights, as the best places to grow it are the lands above sea level between 600 to 1400 meters. It can also be grown at other altitudes, but the yield remains. uneven.
And by monitoring the experiences of saffron cultivation in Jordan in the 2021 season, all the experiences of farmers in Jordan who relied on the Jordan saffron farm as a source of saffron bulbs have succeeded, thank God. So that the experiments spread in most regions of the Kingdom, except for the Aqaba region.
Where we can say that most areas in Jordan are suitable for saffron cultivation.

processing operations:

1-Plowing the land at a depth of 30 cm.
2-Removing stones and exterminating weeds.
3-Preparation of implantation furrows.

Fertilization:

Saffron cultivation takes advantage of the soil for several years in most cases, and therefore it requires soil rich in organic matter and mineral elements
One dunam needs 2-4 tons of organic fertilizer, in addition to phosphorus and potassium, which are useful for bulbs in general.
Fertilization should take place about a month before planting.
Cultivation density of saffron:
The suitable density for planting saffron bulbs is between 20,000 to 25,000 bulbs per acre.
How to grow saffron:
Saffron cultivation is in the form of lines, and in this case, the distance between the lines must be about 20 cm, leaving a distance of approximately 15 cm between the bulbs to obtain the previously mentioned density.

Irrigation:

To ensure a successful season and a high flowering rate, the irrigation process must be carried out regularly after planting the bulbs, twice a week in case of late rains.
Care must be taken to irrigate at the end of the day to avoid evaporation of water.
Constantly monitoring soil moisture and being careful not to over-irrigate to avoid damaging the crop and causing damage to the bulbs.

diseases resistance :

We noticed that saffron bulbs are highly resistant to diseases and pests, as the bulbs, or even the leaves and flowers, were not exposed to disease due to pests or parasites.

Taking into account the seriousness of rodents on bulbs such as al-Khaland
In addition, the bulbs bear the most difficult climatic conditions and harsh temperatures, starting from freezing to 40 degrees.
